Prostate specific antigen (PSA Total) is a blood test that helps in the screening of prostate cancer. PSA is a protein produced by both cancerous and noncancerous tissue in the prostate, a small gland that sits below the bladder in males. This test is also used to monitor recurrence & response to treatment in known cases of prostate cancer. Many other conditions, such as an enlarged or inflamed prostate can also increase PSA levels. This assay is used for monitoring patients with a history of Prostate cancer and as an early indicator of recurrence and response to treatment. The test is commonly used for Prostate cancer screening.
